In many ways the MGC is one of motoring’s great might-have-beens – a wonderful idea with bags of appeal, but not executed as well as it could or should have been, despite Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II buying one for her son, Prince Charles, as a twenty-first birthday present.
The car was conceived soon after the launch of the MGB GT, one idea being to create an Austin-Healey spin-off that was in the same vein as the MG Midget/Austin-Healey Sprite. But Donald Healey abhorred the MGC so much that he flatly refused toCorporation to badge engineer it as an Austin-Healey.
