Having had a career as a mechanic, Les Hudson got to see many different cars but one stood out. “I always wanted a GT. One of my old work governors used to have a white one and he was a bit of a ‘Jack-the-lad’. I thought: ‘I’d love one of those GTs’ but couldn’t afford it. I was thinking of getting married and that. I had to wait a while.”
His memory of the Abingdon classic goes back to his school days. “I remember first seeing the first MGBs roadsters when I was at school, in the Sixties, and I liked those but I don’t think it’s a pretty car. When you look at the design of the GT, with the nice sloping back… it’s a Pininfarina car.”
Clearly, there is still a keen interest in the roadster version of the MGB for Les. He’s owned one for 14 years, as he recounts: “It was my very first MG when the children left homenewspaper and saw an advert for a B and decided to ‘just take a look’, with my wife Frances, on our way home. A week later I went back to pick it up.” But why choose a roadster over a GT at that stage? “It was an affordable price at the time and I really like the car.”
