Seizing the initiative

Having finally made the decision that I was brave enough to take on this project with the assistance of my friend Roger Derrick, as described in the October 2021 issue, the next step was to see if we had a viable engine.

I had previously stripped the carburettors and most other ancillaries from the engine before we had removed it from the car, separately from the gearbox and overdrive unit, so that it could be mounted on a mobile engine stand. As the engine had refused to crank over when still in the car, our first move was to see ifcrank. Unfortunately, despite squirting copious amounts of release oil through the spark plug holes, leaving it for a while and then both of us trying to turn the crank from the pulley and flywheel ends simultaneously, there was still no discernible movement.
