Why aren’t we more impatient? People who play videogames are stereotyped as distractible children, in need of constant stimulation and excitement, yet I’ve always been amazed at just how much filler we’ll put up with in order to get to the good stuff. Final Fantasy XIII is famously described as a game that “gets better after 20 hours”, a claim I can’t verify because I only lasted half that long.

I understand it, though. I’d crawl through broken glass – or sit through a or . Some gameplay can be so unique, so enjoyable, so enduring, that it’s really worth the wait. But that doesn’t explain why the wait is there in the first place.
