Soon after Iwan Serrurier conceived the Moviola as a projector in 1917, it became clear that its cost was prohibitive for home use. When it struggled to sell, a friend suggested he repurpose it as a device for film editing. Seven years later, the adapted Moviola was released, quickly becoming an indispensable cutting-room tool. It continued to be used throughout the industry even as new models took over; while digital editing effectively sounded its death knell, 21st-century films such as Spielberg’s Munich were still cut with a Moviola (editor Michael Kahn was nominated for an Academy Award for his work).
From being
