01 DINKA CATTLE CULTURE
The Dinka are the largest ethnic group in South Sudan, numbering in excess of 1.5 million people. They are an agro-pastoralist tribe whose culture revolves around cattle herding: cattle are not only of great economic importance, but they have religious significance too, and are the source of a family’s prestige. It is possible to visit the Dinka cattle camps in Bahr el Ghazal and Unity State, and also in Bor, where young boys tend to at least 500 cows at any one time. Bor is also the centre for traditional wrestling, which really is a sight to behold.
