“Tegan doesn’t like my concept for the album,” Sara smiles mischievously. “I really see this as the Tegan and Sara break-up record.” Did your breath just get caught in your chest a little?

Mine too.

For over 25 years, Canadian twins Tegan and Sara Quin have busted doors open in the industry whilst providing the soundtrack to the lives of their LGBTQI fans. Suffice to say, the band breaking up would cause hysteria within the community. But don’t panic. Both sisters seem fulfilled and content when I speak to them over Zoom.

Sara is sitting back in her chair, wearing a pale yellow jumper, her hair swept up in a messy bun. She comes across as a deep-thinker and a little less extroverted than Tegan, who sports a bold patterned sweater and swears frequently to emphasise her points. But neither one of them shies away from speaking their mind.

Sara explains that while making their upcoming 10th studio album Crybaby, they had to have big, existential conversations about everything, from what they have to offer the world as a band to their chemistry as collaborators. “I think we’ve found
