Plants and insects supplied the colours for dyeing and printing textiles from pre-history until one day in 1856, when teenage chemistry student William Henry Perkin ran an experiment with chemicals from coal tar. The experiment went wrong, but Perkin accidentally discovered aniline purple – a synthetic dye – and the use of natural pigments on an industrial scale was soon overtaken by aniline dyes.
