WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Staged every five years in a different city, the World Expo – or Expo, as it’s usually known – is a global extravaganza showcasing cultures from across the world alongside all that’s new and most innovative in modern technology. The tradition dates back to the Great Exhibition of 1851, held at London’s Crystal Palace during the height of the Industrial Revolution, which established a craze for giant international exhibitions which has continued to the present day. Landmarks of former exhibitions still dot the planet, including the Atomium in Brussels (1958), Seattle’s Space Needle (1962) and, most famously, the Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
