The long-standing Land Rover and the equally well-known TD5 engine are two potentially encouraging aspects of the 2006 Defender shown in our photos. Providing you can appreciate the agricultural aspects of a Defender, which are undoubtedly upmarket and refined when compared to an earlier Series model, these vehicles are high in demand as an off-roader or a fashionable form of transport.
The TD5 diesel engine appeared in the late Nineties, offering direct injection, five cylinders and a twin-cam head. Despite a few early teething troubles (oil pump drive failure and cylinder-head movement), they were fixed within a couple of years and soon acquired a reputation for reliability.
So, the Defender seen here sounds promising, but what is such a vehicle like to service? We found the one in our photographs for sale at Tasker and Lacy of Leeds, so offered to help service and inspect it. Looking inside the engine bay, once the engine cover is removed, access to the main service items is quite straightforward. Underneath, there’s a similar story, with space to inspect the suspension components and drain the oils.
