CLAY WORKS STUDIOS

Five years ago, my family and I moved to Scotland to start a new life and a new business, teaching and making with clay in southwest Scotland. The decision had been a long time in the making.

Before the move, my wife Lauren and I, along with our two children, had been living in Devon. We had worked for various potteries, made and sold our own work, and taught ceramics in several schools, colleges and art centres across the region.

I met Lauren in 2003 when we were both working for different potteries in Totnes, South Devon. Lauren was an apprentice at Dartington Pottery, and I, having been a Dartington apprentice, was working for the potter Colin Kellam. Shortly after we met, I moved to North Devon to start my own business (again making pots), and after Lauren’s apprenticeship ended, she became a head thrower at Dartington until the workshop closed.
