    ▲ Roughly form the block of clay to the height and shape you want the vase to be. It needs to be quite substantial, although you will remove much of the clay in the making process.

    Leave the block to firm up to leather hard.

    You will need:

    ■ A solid block of clay – earthenware or stoneware, colour of choice

    ■ A selection of different sized loop tools

    ■ A DIY-type palette knife – the kind used for scraping paint etc

    ■ Glaze of choiceto fit clay type
