With summer nearly upon us, what better theme to have for this issue than colour, whether you are painting with it, or on it? From vibrant summer greens and subtle watercolour41) tackles the subject of green in summer landscapes, with colour-mixing and application exercises followed by a full step-by-step summer landscape demonstration. As always, Stephen’s message is to keep your painting simple – and make time for lots of practice. Hazel Jarvis (pages 26-29) uses last month’s hand-painted paper in a variety of reds and greens, along with found paper and watercolour, to complete an imaginative and colourful mixed-media artwork, which elevates the most everyday vegetable, the humble beetroot, into a piece of art. I enjoy projects such as this, as they inspire me to experiment and be freer with my approach and, while Hazel’s finished collage is large (53×53cm), I plan to use her techniques to create postcard-sized artwork.
