“The idea to motor overland back from England to Madras did not occur to me with an Archimedean outburst, in fact the initial inspiration came over one evening as I was sitting by the cool of the Adyar River on the Madras Boat Club lawn enjoying a quiet jar of ale. The scheme gradually matured in my mind during the months before I began my first home leave and by the time I reached England my plans were drawn up and I was able to begin making the arrangements at once. These arrangements were somewhat abruptly disrupted by various romantic upheavals and the nature of the trip changed in quick succession from a bachelor’s fray to a honeymoon and then back again.” P.F.C.
