The risk of dropped shots when we miss greens is ever-present for all, but for many, when those errant approaches find sand rather than grass, the spectre of potential disaster looms large.

While there is always the chance for topped, chunked or misjudged chips or pitches, the scope for something far worse rears its ugly head for many from the sand. This can mean leaving the ball pretty much where it was once, twice, maybe more times; burying it deep in the face in a near-impossible position; or thinning it rapier-like through the green and OOB, leaving you facing the same shot again, effectively two strokes worse off and totally devoid of confidence.
