Are ‘gimmes’ a good or bad thing in golf?

Gimmes can lead to bad habits, a sense of false security and friction between golfers. In competitive stroke play, the gimme is not allowed. But in friendly stroke play golf, the gimme is sometimes used. In those ‘bounce’ games, the gimme can cause confusion and frustration – who in the group agrees that putt is a gimme? Do all agree?
