Ivan’s BSA M20

IT’S FIVE YEARS SINCE I LAST VISITED IVAN COUNSELL in his Gloucestershire home. Last time it was because I’d spotted his remarkable BSA M21 at a Kickback show.

At first glance this was a tired-looking rat bike but on closer inspection it was much cleverer than that, so I popped a business card on it and Ivan responded. We spent a splendid and memorable day chatting about his creation and we also visited his mate who built punt guns and had ridden a Norton Atlas halfway across the Sahara.

A text from Ivan out of the blue was bound to be offering an opportunity not to be missed. He was asking if I wanted to see his latest bike, this one built from redundant bits of an old BSA M20. A few weeks after this visit, I saw
