Blessed with an almost perfect climate, fertile soil and some of the best indigenous grape varieties in the country, Puglia is one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in the whole of Italy. The weather itself, of course, is outside the grower’s control, but because this slender peninsula is surrounded by water, there is little fluctuation in conditions from year to year. Supplying the area with sufficient quantities of water during the hot summers has historically made theextremely difficult, but grapes (and grain) have managed to survive through the centuries. Thanks to this combination of factors, the harsh Puglian soil provides the ideal conditions for producing quality grapes – as the vines gain character and resilience from their struggle to survive.
