Wayne Elphick was joined on the footplate by Aveling piston-valve steam roller owner Darren Izzard who steered the engine perfectly with Wayne’s immaculate water cart behind. The trip had started on the Friday from near Ticehurst to the Rural Times Past Rally at Horns Cross, Northiam in East Sussex. It turned out to be the second hottest weekend of the summer, undertaking such a trip in the circumstances was certainly not going to be easy.
Since Wayne and Carla’s kit of parts arrived from Old Glory editor Peter Love in March 2020 he has been pestered by his wife to get it all together and this weekend was the culmination of all his hard work over the past two years in between all his daily work on 4x4 vehicles, particularly Land Rovers.
Wayne is a clever engineer and with the engine back in his fine steam workshop the new bronze rear axle bearings were pulled in using a commercial engine liner tool. The outside surface had been machined by Brian Hope correctly after a few false starts and some years lost in the waiting process unfortunately. Previously the rear axle
