There were times when Dan Walker was writing his latest that he had to step away and take a deep breath. The popular TV presenter, journalist and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant had spent several months talking to “humble heroes” – people who have been galvanised after loss or hardship to help or inspire others – and he became too invested in their stories.
“Some of the chapters were emotionally draining. “I was like: ‘I can’t think about any other chapter.’ I needed to cogitate and work my way through.”
