Autonomous driving provides significant safety and productivity benefits, and it is for these reasons that vehicle manufacturers and software developers continue to commit significant resources to reach the objective of developing fully autonomous vehicles. Research has determined human factors are either the primary cause or a contributory factor in up to 95% of all vehicle accidents. These human components include the failure to recognisea developing situation; poor decision-making, often regarding speed or overtaking; driving when distracted, under the influence, or fatigued; a lack of skill, and reckless driving.
Autonomous vehicles would result in substantial savings on driver policing and training, not to mention the cost to society of human injuries and fatalities. Many service vehicles including taxis, delivery vehicles and long-distance trucks would no longer require an operator, a significant cost saving. Private individuals would be able to better utilise the time
