Craig Lee Off to the Beach, oil, 11 3/3× 15¾in (30×40cm). ‘My inspiration for this painting was from a family holiday to Brittany, France, and those wonderful yellow shopfront canopies. Whilst there I purposely took several reference photos with a studio painting in mind. My intention was to recreate the narrative.

‘After I’d first toned my panel with a mixture of Winsor & Newton Galeria acrylic titanium white and raw umber, I put down a quick linear drawing using a small round brush, to establish my composition. I then focused on mixing the correct tonal values to lay on with my palette knife, using Winsor & Newton Artists’ oils.’
