NOW WHAT?

Q I’m having a hard time finding a birth record for my grandmother. Death records and censuses say she was born in Washington, DC somewhere between 1880 and 1885.

A The District of Columbia didn’t begin widespread birth registration until 1874, but even so your grandmother’s birth may have been too early to have been recorded. You can search DC birth records,>. If you can’t find her birth record there, the next step might be to check church records. The FamilySearch Wiki has a useful guide <>.
