TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT Double-click to highlight text by words

As I get older and my hands more jittery, I find it harder to highlight words letter by letter using my mouse. So I’m relieved to have found a trick that lets you highlight text word by word, so you don’t have to stop precisely after a letter.

If that sounds confusing, just open a document and highlight text in the usual way – by holding down your left mouse button and dragging across. You have to release the button at the correct moment after a letter to finish selecting.

Now try double-clicking the first word you want to select, then without releasing the click drag across the text. You should see that the highlighted text jumps from word to word –
