Big game fishing is normally a fairly private exercise with anglers and boats slipping out of harbour shortly after first light, venturing far offshore in search of huge quarry. We quite like setting off in this discrete way with anglers chatting in hushed but expectant voices. What we are not used to is being paraded in front of the whole town, which is exactly what happened to mark the start of the 30th FIPS World Game Fishing Championships in Pescara last month.
The anglers from each country were lined up Olympic style, complete with marching band, and were paraded through Pescara to be welcomed for the official commencement of the 30th FIPS World Big Game Fishing Championships.
TV camera crews and other press took considerable interest in the England team given the death of The Queen the day before. More than a few Italians in the crowd graciously offered us condolences.
