All in the Family

THE WEES

Co-founded by Wee Kheng Chiang as United Chinese Bank in 1935, United Overseas Bank (UOB) has remained under the control of the Wee family since as Singapore’s third-largest financial institution.

Kheng Chiang’s son Wee Cho Yaw served as chairman until 2013, and director until 2018, a position he held for over 60 years. Now, the business is in the hands of his own children. His eldest son Wee Ee Cheong serves as deputy chairman and CEO of the bank, while Wee Ee Chao heads the stockbroking arm, UOB Kay Hian. Younger son Wee Ee Lim helms Haw Par, the maker of Tiger Balm, and daughter Wee Wei Ling (left) is an executive director of Pan Pacific Hotels Group. In 1997, she revolutionised the wellness industry when she opened St Gregory Marine Spa—the first spa opened under a Singapore-listed company.

Now, the third generation of Wees are making their own mark in the business world. Ee Cheong’s son Wee Teng Wen is the co-founder and managing partner of The Lo & Behold Group, which manages an impressive portfolio of lifestyle establishments including the three-Michelin-starred restaurant, Odette, and The Warehouse Hotel.
