Zimbabwean journalist Jeffrey Moyo loves his job and wouldn’t swap it for any other. But last year it landed him in prison with the risk of a 10-year jail term.
Moyo, an international correspondent for The New York Times, was arrested in May 2021, accused of making a false representation to immigration officials in relation to obtaining media accreditation for two of his colleagues, Christina Goldbaum and Joao Silva, so they could work in Zimbabwe.
He was convicted, fined 200,000 Zimbabwe dollars (about $550) and slapped with a suspended two-year sentence which could be enforced if he is convicted of a similar offence again within five years.
While relieved that he got off with a fine, Moyo worries about the stain on his reputation that a conviction brings. His lawyers are putting together an appeal.
