Some like it not

BLONDE directed by Andrew Dominik

bleak and brutal biopic of Marilyn Monroe, is a horrible movie to watch. Its near three hours deliver a cradle-to-grave account of her relentlessly unhappy life and victimisation and in a film that can feel like it’s exploiting her all over again. It might come with, celebrated American novelist Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 fictionalised account of Monroe’s inner life. But although the film is no formulaic biopic, it is a tiresome and unpalatable one. Its one redeeming feature is Cuban actress Ana de Armas (, ), who delivers a stunning portrayal of Monroe as she goes from being the unwanted daughter of an abusive, alcoholic single mother to the blonde bombshell of the silver screen.
