Hiking in the Highlands

To my right, a brightly coloured wooden fishing boat sails out of a tiny harbour. To my left, a herd of Highland cows have wandered down from nearby hills to graze the grass-fringed beach. Overhead, a group of Arctic Terns swoop and call.

I’m strolling the mid-section of the John O’Groats Trail, a 147-mile coastal walking route stretching from Inverness to Britain’s most northerly point. It showcases Scotland’s dramatic Moray Firth coastline, with views from craggy cliff tops and sandy beaches, as well as country lanes and footpaths.
