BUCYRUS-ERIE BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS Part Two

n 1962 a major contract was awarded to a consortium of contractors headed by Morrison-Knudsen Co. Inc. for construction of the San Luis Dam in California. This involved movement of over 80 million cubic yards of material over a long distance. An engineering study revealed that a bucket wheel excavator capable of moving up to 4,500 cubic yards per hour would be the most economical method. An order was immediately placed with Bucyrus-Erie Company for such a machine, and the 684-WX was designed, manufactured and delivered
