Although Keystone excavators are notable for their unique design, operation and appearance, their manufacture by the Keystone Driller Company must be regarded as a sideline to this company’s main line of drilling equipment, as its name implies.
In 1882, Robert M Downie established the Keystone Portable Steam Driller Company at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. A few years earlier he had observed how very slow it was and what hard work it took to sink small test holes by hand.
