A Family Legacy Fishing Adventure — Hawai‘i-Style

Two old men were sitting on a bench overlooking the harbor as city traffic rushed along behind them and tall buildings blocked the view of the mountains. They enjoyed these visits together, waiting for their bus and talking about the old days, while gazing out across the ever-changing sea.

“So much has changed, I hardly know this place where I grew up,” one said, squinting at the memories flooding his mind.

“Everything changes… everything!”

The other nodded slowly, staring out across the harbor waters, where youngsters with long poles were dipping for halalū. He grinned. “Everything changes,” he replied, “but only fishing never change!”

There have been advances in fishing gear, and we have learned a lot more about the fish and how to catch them. We have better for our feet and clever backpacks
