URBAN OASIS

From the moment you walk through the front door, you can sense the welcoming feel of the home. From the crisp, modern color palette to the quaint reading nook, custom built-ins, playful artwork and wide-plank white oak flooring throughout—the home’s impeccable architecture coupled with elevated interior design is definitely something to see. Since 2013, the Denver Life Magazine Designer Showhouse initiative has raised close to $300,000 for various local charities. This year, the project’s benefactor is the Alzheimer’s Association: Colorado Chapter, with all proceeds from public tours going towards Alzheimer’s and dementia awareness.

Situated on a corner in the charming, historic West Highlands neighborhood, the design of the house breathes new life into the idea of family living—filled with delightful options for entertaining, bold uses of color and an intriguing floor plan designed to capture the breadth of the space. This year’s brand new, three-story Urban Scandinavian home was constructed by Denver’s KLM Construction Inc. “We couldn’t resist the opportunity to embrace the stunning views of the Front Range from the deck off the third floor,” says KLM Construction Inc.’s Mike Cachat and Kris Miller, which is why the firm chose to create an inviting family game room at the same level. “It’s one of many spaces that draws the generations together.”

Working with local architect Frank A. Romero, NCARB, LEED AP of RomeroFord Architects, the underlying vision reflects a clean, Scandinavian minimalistic style with an abundance of natural materials and foliage. Each of the fourteen interior designers who were invited to take part in the project began with this exciting starting point from which to expand the theme.

Outside, the home’s exterior is comprised of cream-colored masonry accented by stained cedar shiplap siding, concrete, brick and black steel trim; a striking balance of texture, line and form. Inside, the designers have pulled out all the stops, creating original and inviting spaces for the modern family. The great room on the ground floor establishes a warm, indoor/outdoor atmosphere with accordian doors affording an abundance of light that opens to multiple outdoor living spaces, which includes a cozy fireplace wall for cool, Winter nights. This space adjoins an open kitchen featuring colorful cabinets and a convenient island for casual, family dining.
