United for sale? Not likely

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been commonly labelled, in headline-writers’ shorthand, as “Britain’s richest man.” How anyone knows this for a fact in a financial world awash with hidden ownerships, nominee appointments and tax havens is a mystery. However, the mere mention of his name in the same sentence as that of Manchester United was enough to fire the rumour mill into overdrive.

Most likely the Ratcliffe flurry will end up as a minor footnote to the season. After all, the Glazers draw down £20 million each year from their leveraged buyout of United. They also have skins as thick as their wallets. United’s overall income stream remains sky-high, whether Premier League champions or not. Why should they sell up?
