Jenny Beavan is in her office on an industrial estate somewhere in Chullora, New South Wales. Tantalisingly nearby are the first glut of outfits that the three-time Oscar-winning costume designer has begun producing for Furiosa, the highly anticipated Mad Max prequel from director George Miller, headlined by this month's Vogue Australia cover star Anya Taylor-Joy. (Beavan won her second Academy Award for the futuristic garb in Mad Max: Fury Road.) That sound in the background? “They're testing motorbike engines and goodness knows what,” Beavan shares, grinning ruefully.

The futuristic wasteland of couldn't be more different to Beavan's most recent release, this month's costume drama . Based on a popular book series from the 1950s, the film follows a London cleaning woman called Ada Harris, played by Lesley Manville.
