BORN IN the heart of golf country, reared on a stretch of beautiful East Lothian coastline that features the densest concentration of championship links courses anywhere in the world, Rory Darge went his own way. Fairways and greens? No. Boxing gloves and a ring? For a spell. Rucks and mauls? Now you’re talking.
“Golf never agreed with me,” says the 22-year-old Glasgow and Scotland flanker who arrived on the international scene with a mighty bang this year. “Some of the other lads loved it and they had a load of places to play right on our doorstep when we were growing up. My brother was into soccer and he’s making his way with Hearts at the minute. I wasn’t any good at soccer either. I liked my boxing and my rugby. I used to go to the boxing gym a lot up until I was about 15.
“I had one fight, in Bellahouston in Glasgow, I think it was. I remember it. The buzz of it.
