Up here, in the far reaches of North Yorkshire, a lot of my ferreting ground is only accessible either by quad or on the hoof. However stunning the landscape may be, it has the ability to make you vulnerable within seconds, as the elements can change quicker than my mood.
This sobering of reality was reinforced earlier this year during a ferreting trip. I witnessed the local mountain rescue holding a training day, ironically on the warrens that I had planned to ferret. However amusing this may appear now, it had a serious undertone. Lives are put at risk rescuing those that are either lost, injured or ill-prepared.
