The metaverse

IT’S BEEN called the next level of how people do business and go about their work in tech and finance. Now more and more people are talking about the metaverse and the future of the internet.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook to Meta, to describe its focus on the metaverse which is expected to be worth around $780 billion (R13 trillion) by 2024. Since last year many companies have been interested in the idea that it may be the next “big thing”.

But what exactly is it and how will it impact the way we go about our everyday lives?

WHAT IS THE METAVERSE?

It’s made up of two words: “meta” meaning beyond and “universe”. The metaverse has been called a virtual world that immerses, or deeply engages, us and mirrors, or is similar to, our real life.

Meta defines the metaverse as “a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you”.
