    CRISIS BREWS IN THE TAIWAN STRAIT

    Nancy Pelosi’s visit stokes tensions in region

    CHINA has revealed plans for air and sea military exercises on an unprecedented scale near Taiwan, prompting fears of a crisis in the Taiwan Strait.

    This follows a visit to the self-governing island by NANCY PELOSI, the US House speaker, in defiance of threats from China, which said it would treat the visit as a major provocation. She is the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the island and said it was part of an American obligation to stand with democracies against autocratic countries.

    China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and it views visits by foreign government officials as their recognition
