Every time you visit a website, your PC passes a request for the site’s contents to your internet service provider (ISP). The ISP looks up the server hosting the site using a Domain Name System (DNS) directory, retrieves the site’s content and sends it back to your browser. As a result, it can – if it chooses – keep track of what you’re doing online.
