MASKS

The first freedivers harvesting pearls and sponges honed their craft sans eye protection, but at considerable cost to the health of their eyes. As time went on, early cultures would create the protomask, rudimentary goggles made with polished sea shells that offered a less-than-ideal degree of vision. It wasn’t until the invention of metal helmets fitted with glass portholes that divers could finally see the underwater world around them with any clarity. But these early diving suits were bulky and cumbersome, and it would take the invention of plastics in the early 1900s before the first practical diving masks could finally revolutionise freediving and ultimately scuba diving for the masses.
