FLAGS

Where in the world have you been? Hook up a few of these flags by Sara Huntington to represent countries you’ve visited

■ Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton (100% cotton, 50g/105m), 1 ball of each: Leaf (7171), Citronelle (7175), Coral (7180), Gypsum (7168), Deep Sea (7199)

■ A 2.5mm (US B/1 or C/2) hook

■ Yellow stranded cotton

■ Black stranded cotton

■ Needle with a point

■ PVA glue

■ 6 self-adhesive magnets (available from amzn.to/3qemtfz)

TENSION

Tension is not critical for this project, but it may affect the yarn quantities required

MEASUREMENTS

Each Flag measures approx 6x5cm (2¼x2in)

NOTES

Flags are worked in rows throughout. There is a Basic Flag pattern written first. Countries’ Flags refer to this pattern, referencing the colours required.

FLAGS

BASIC FLAG

Ch13.

Row 1 (RS) Dc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. [12 sts]

Rows 2-10 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), dc in each st across, turn.

Fasten off.

1 FLAG OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Using the Basic Flag, work Row 1 using Deep Sea. For Rows 2-4 use Deep Sea for the first 5 sts, Coral for the next 2 sts and Deep Sea for the final 5 sts. Work Rows 5-6 in Coral. For Rows 7-10 use Deep Sea for the first 5 sts, Coral for the next 2 sts and Deep Sea for the final 5 sts.

Fasten off.

Using the image as a guide, embroider the rem design with Coral and Gypsum.

2 FLAG OF JAPAN

Using the Basic Flag, work with Gypsum throughout.

Fasten off.

Using Coral, make a mgic loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch1, 6dc in loop, ss to beg dc. [6 sts]

Round 2 (RS) Ch1, 2dc in each st around, ss to beg dc. [12 sts]

Fasten off.

Sew to the RS of the Flag.

3 FLAG OF CHINA

Using the Basic Flag, work with Coral throughout.

Fasten off.

Using yellow stranded cotton, embroider the stars and dots in the top-left corner.

4 FLAG OF INDIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-3 in Coral, Rows 4-7 in Gypsum and Rows 8-10 in Leaf.

Fasten off.

Using black stranded cotton, embroider the circle motif on the central section.

5 FLAG OF GAMBIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-3 in Leaf, Row 4 in Gypsum, Rows 5-6 in Deep Sea, Row 7 in Gypsum, Rows 8-10 in Coral.

Fasten off.

6 FLAG OF COLOMBIA

Using the Basic Flag, work Rows 1-2 in Coral, Rows 3-4 in Deep Sea, Rows 5-10 in Citronelle.
