Bowe's off-track battle

John Bowe is delighted he is still racing, not the least because if he wasn’t, he might be telling another story. The Melbourne-based maestro, who has contested and won in almost every major category of the sport, fronted up for his Motorsport Australia (CAMS) racing licence medical in January this year.

Blood samples were part of the deal, including checks for diabetes. As usual, John told the doctor to check everything in case he needed a ‘service, as they joked together. He’s had regular PSA tests for years with nothing unusual to show for it but this time the result was a huge shock.

“I was feeling very normal, if I could ever describe myself as that,” he chuckles, “so I wasn’t expecting any issues but this time the PSA reading was high. I had no signs or symptoms and it hadn’t been going up over time or anything like that, which can happen. It just came out
