uch depends upon which Romans we are talking about. It is important to remember that ‘Roman’ was a legal definition of civic status more than it was a cultural description. Jewish Romans ate differently from Gallic Romans, who in turn ate differently from Latins. We should not imagine that the average Roman spent his evenings in the any more than a modern westerner dines out in a top restaurant every night.
