HASN’T it been nice to have a proper summer for a change? Some parts of the country regularly see warm weather, but it’s less common up here in north-west England and southern Scotland. Still, it brought some problems. I’ve been lucky but others less so and there were lots of reports of birds dying in the extreme heat. I’ve seen some fanciers showing thermometers with birdroom temperatures of 40°C. Mine were regularly up in the 30s. I wonder if the insulation I installed helped keep the temperature a little lower. I did use a fan in front of a bucket of cold water that also contained ice cubes and cool packs. This produced a noticeable decrease in temperatures almost as soon as the
