A SOLWAY WORKHORSE
Just like Massey Ferguson, Gretna has a proud history. The village is historically the first in Scotland, and is famous for holding runaway weddings. This practice dates back to the 18th century, and grew out of the differences that existed between the English and Scottish marriage laws. Young couples would defy their parents, and elope north of the border to ‘tie the knot’. The blacksmith’s shop, where many of these ceremonies took place, is now a popular tourist attraction.
However, agriculture is the dominant industry in the area, and farming makes a very important contribution to the local economy. Peter Hornby is a mechanic, and has lived in the Gretna area for most of his life. He comes from a farming background, which accounts for his interest in old tractors.
