Interesting encounters in North Canterbury

Being on the road in the late summer means fewer cars and near-empty camping grounds, windy beaches, café owners who are pleased to see you and mainly good weather during the day.

The mornings were a bit crisp. The days warmed by about 10 o’clock but started to cool from mid-afternoon. Pack a sweatshirt for the evening.

Our route took us from Christchurch north to Waiau, over the hill to Parnassus, down SH1 to Cheviot and we then turned east to go into Gore Bay – a popular surf beach. Then heading south to a series of beaches:
