WINGED WONDERS

t first glance, two juvenile burrowing owls appear to embrace in this poignant photograph by, the dynamic shot was photographed in May 2020 in Cape Coral, where burrowing owls are local avifauna and the city’s official bird. As their name indicates, these petite owls live belowground, occupying either holes they dig themselves or those vacated by small animals like squirrels. Barbanera-Wedel’s photography has been well-displayed across Southwest Florida; she’s received awards and commendations from Friends of Rookery Bay in collaboration with United Arts Council of Collier County and Bird Photographer of the Year. Her first solo exhibit came in 2022 at Sarasota Orchestra’s Harmony Gallery, where 21 selected bird images were showcased.
