There’s something particularly New Zealand about the Treasure Island TV story: it is, like Popstars before Idol and Radio with Pictures before MTV, the unheralded Kiwi predecessor of an entire television genre.
It first appeared on screen on June 1, 1997, two months before the Swedish show , the format. Its creator, Touchdown Productions’ Darryl McEwen, is the plucky Richard Pearse to creator Charlie Parsons’ Wright Brothers.
