The Battle of Quaggafontein

In the early hours of 20 September 1901, Boers from Pieter Kritzinger’s commando unleashed relentless rifle fire into the Lovat’s Scouts camp, killing 16 men and wounding about 40 more.

Although the dead scouts were initially buried on Quaggafontein, their remains, with the exception of two Scottish officers, would eventually be reinterred in Aliwal North’s Garden of Remembrance in the 1970s.
